Petition to Honor Charlie Kirk and Foster Inclusive Education in Township High School District 214

To: The Board of Education, Township High School District 214

From: Concerned Residents, Alumni, Parents, Students, and Community Members of District 214

Date: September 12, 2025

We, the Undersigned, Call for Unity, Recognition, and Open Dialogue in Our Schools In the wake of the tragic and senseless assassination of Charlie Kirk—a proud alumnus of Wheeling High School and a global voice for civic engagement.

The Township High School District 214 community stands at a crossroads.

Charlie's life was cut short on September 10th, 2025, leaving a nation in mourning and our local community reflecting on his profound impact. As a Wheeling High School graduate who rose from student council activities to founding Turning Point USA (TPUSA)—an organization that has empowered millions of young people in political discourse and voter registration—Charlie exemplified the potential of District 214's students to shape the world. As a student, he was a multi-sport athlete, who excelled in Varsity Football and Basketball (Team Captain), played in marching band and wind symphony, and achieved Eagle Scout. These accomplishments are beyond what a typical student can simultaneously achieve. Yet, prior to this heartbreaking event, Charlie's extraordinary achievements went largely unacknowledged by our district. It was only after his death that an official statement recognized his existence.

This moment compels us to act—not out of division, but to heal, honor excellence, and ensure every voice in our diverse community feels seen and valued.  District 214's commitment to educational excellence, safe learning environments, and community involvement—as outlined in our district's guiding principles—demands no less. By fostering opportunities for all students to engage authentically, we build a stronger, more resilient future. This petition transcends political lines.

To Republicans and conservatives: Charlie was a champion of your values—a self-made leader who advanced free enterprise, patriotism, and youth empowerment. Honoring him upholds the legacy of achievement you hold dear.

To Democrats and progressives: True equity in education means protecting free speech for *all* viewpoints, just as we celebrate groups like the League of Women Voters. Denying space for diverse ideas silences the very democracy we all cherish.

To independents and non-political residents: This is about healing our community after tragedy, promoting civil discourse, and creating inclusive spaces where every student—from every background—can thrive without fear of exclusion. It's about the human spirit, not partisanship.

Our Demands: Reasonable Steps Toward Inclusivity and Remembrance  We respectfully urge the District 214 Board of Education to take the following actions to honor Charlie Kirk, promote balanced civic education, and align with our district's values of excellence and opportunity:

1. Highlight Charlie Kirk as a Notable Alumnus at Wheeling High School - Ensure any honorary plaques, signage, or listings recognizing Charlie as a distinguished graduate in the school's collection. His journey—from Wheeling High's halls to founding a national organization and earning accolades like the upcoming Presidential Medal of Freedom—mirrors the innovative spirit District 214 nurtures in its 140+ co-curricular programs.

2. Approve Requests for Turning Point USA High School Chapters District-Wide - Expedite and approve applications for TPUSA chapters at any District 214 school. As a group dedicated to free speech, voter education, and respectful debate, TPUSA complements existing partnerships like those with the League of Women Voters. Just as D214 welcomes LWV voter registration drives, we must extend the same equal opportunity to all student-led initiatives that encourage civic participation—ensuring no idea is sidelined in our pursuit of a healthy exchange of perspectives.

3. Establish a District-Wide Day of Honor for Charlie Kirk - Proclaim a "Charlie Kirk Day of Honor" in coordination with the presentation of his Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award. This could include school assemblies, moments of reflection, or community events focused on themes of resilience, free expression, and public service. Such a day would not only celebrate one alumnus's legacy but also reinforce District 214's mission to prepare students for active citizenship in a diverse society.

These requests are grounded in fairness, precedent, and our shared commitment to a "safe and healthy learning environment" where students can "be their authentic selves." They promote the civil exchange of *all* ideas, as envisioned in District 214's emphasis on long-term student success and community partnerships.

Why Now? A Call for Bipartisan Healing. The events of the past days remind us that division erodes our bonds—whether in national politics or local classrooms. By acting on these demands, District 214 can lead by example: modeling unity in grief, equity in opportunity, and excellence in remembrance. Let's transform this tragedy into a testament to what our schools can achieve when we include everyone.

We invite you to join us: Sign below to add your voice. Together, we can ensure District 214 remains a beacon of inclusive education for Republicans, Democrats, independents, and all who call this community home.
