There is some confusion on social media about the new Premier League rule on diving. The new rule only applies in a situation where simulation has led to a player being sent off. It is now possible for this to be reviewed after the game, for the red card to be rescinded and for the player who dived to be banned for 3 games. This is a good first step, but it does not extend to players who dive to win a free kick or penalty, so the #stopdiving petition will continue. Thank you to all 401 people who have now signed the petition. Your support is much appreciated. The next step is to send the petition to FIFA in support of the FA's discussions to include diving within the scope for retrospective action. I currently intend to do this when the petition has 1,000 signatures, so any further help you can give to attract support would be very welcome. One MLS fan asked in the summer why the MLS is able to impose fines and bans retrospectively when other national associations say they cannot do the same. I put this to the FA, who responded as follows: 'National associations, within reason, are allowed to implement rules which they deem appropriate for their competitions which is why you will see some rules being applied in some countries and not others. There are currently no plans for The FA to implement new rules with regards to this issue, but the subject of simulation remains something the game’s stakeholders continue to have dialogue about.' In short, this means that the FA could take a lead on the diving issue if they chose to, but their current approach is to discuss the subject with FIFA to try to get a change in the laws approved centrally. The #stopdiving petition will continue in place until some firm action is taken, whether by FA or FIFA. Action will come, and I do sense a growing unity on the subject. Hopefully, the changes we are about to see at FIFA will lead to a new approach, but continued pressure from fans can only help.
