To: McKeesport Area School Board, District Administration, and School Principals

We, the undersigned students, parents, guardians, educators, taxpayers, and community members, respectfully request that the McKeesport Area School District end its mandatory school uniform policy and return to a reasonable standard dress code.

School uniforms were introduced with the goal of promoting equality and reducing distractions in the classroom. However, over time, the policy has placed an unnecessary financial burden on many families in our community. As several Pittsburgh-area school districts have begun reviewing or eliminating mandatory uniform requirements because of the costs they impose on families, we believe it is time for the McKeesport Area School District to do the same.

Why the Uniform Policy Should Be Reconsidered
1. Financial Hardship for Families
Many families in our district face significant financial challenges. Purchasing specific uniform shirts, pants, sweaters, and other required items creates an added expense that many households can ill afford. Unlike everyday clothing, uniforms often cannot be worn in other settings, requiring families to maintain two separate wardrobes for their children.

2. Rising Replacement Costs
Children grow quickly, and clothing naturally wears out. Replacing uniforms throughout the school year places additional strain on families already coping with rising costs for housing, groceries, transportation, utilities, and childcare.

3. Student Comfort and Individuality
A reasonable dress code allows students to express their individuality while remaining respectful and appropriate for school. Giving students the flexibility to wear comfortable, affordable clothing can improve confidence and reduce unnecessary stress without compromising the learning environment.

4. Focus on Educational Priorities
Student achievement is strengthened through investments in high-quality teaching, academic support, mental health services, school safety, and educational resources—not through mandatory clothing requirements. District resources and attention should remain focused on improving educational outcomes for every student.

5. Fairness and Reduced Discipline
Students should never miss instructional time or face disciplinary action because their families cannot afford replacement uniform items. A standard dress code would reduce unnecessary disciplinary issues while ensuring that all students are treated with dignity and respect.

Our Proposal
We ask the McKeesport Area School District to replace the mandatory uniform policy with a fair, simple, and inclusive dress code that:

Promotes a safe, respectful, and positive learning environment.
Allows students to wear affordable, everyday clothing that meets school expectations.
Recognizes the financial realities faced by many families.
Reduces unnecessary disciplinary actions related to clothing.
Supports student dignity, attendance, and academic success.
Our Request
By signing this petition, we respectfully ask the McKeesport Area School Board to:

End the mandatory school uniform policy districtwide; or
Make school uniforms completely optional for all students while maintaining a reasonable dress code.
Every child deserves the opportunity to attend school without unnecessary financial barriers. We believe a practical dress code can maintain professionalism and respect while easing the burden on families throughout our community.

We respectfully ask the McKeesport Area School Board to place this issue on a future board meeting agenda, review the current uniform policy, seek input from families and staff, and consider adopting a standard dress code beginning with the next school year.
