 Date: 08-21-2025

We, the undersigned, respectfully petition the Liberty County Board of Education to eliminate the mandatory school uniform policy currently enforced in our public schools.

Statement of Purpose:

The mandatory uniform policy, while well-intentioned, has not achieved its stated goals of improving academic performance, reducing bullying, or fostering equity. Instead, it has created unnecessary financial, social, and cultural challenges for families and students.

We believe that eliminating school uniforms will:

Support Student’s Freedom of Expression: Clothing is a key form of self-expression. Uniforms restrict individuality and limit students' ability to express their identity, culture, and personality—especially during a critical time of growth and development. Public schools are institutions that should encourage creativity, self-confidence, and individuality. Mandatory uniforms unnecessarily limit students’ rights to personal expression, which are protected under the First Amendment when applied reasonably in educational settings.

Reduce Financial Burdens: Uniforms are often an added and unnecessary cost for families, especially those with multiple children or low incomes. Allowing regular clothing can reduce financial stress and give families more flexibility with clothing options they already own.

Equity and Inclusion:  Uniforms often fail to account for differences in body type, gender identity, cultural norms, and personal comfort. This can lead to feelings of exclusion rather than the intended sense of unity.

Lack of Effectiveness:  Research has shown little to no evidence that school uniforms directly improve academic achievement, reduce behavioral issues, or increase attendance. The success of students is shaped more significantly by quality teaching, supportive environments, and access to resources.

Preparation for Adulthood:  Students benefit from learning to make appropriate clothing choices. A balanced dress code that promotes respect and professionalism can better prepare students for the expectations of higher education and the workforce.
We are not opposed to maintaining reasonable dress codes that prohibit offensive or disruptive clothing. However, we believe this can be achieved without mandating uniforms.

Therefore, we respectfully request that the Liberty County School Board:

Review the current uniform policy,

Consider student, parent, and staff input through public forums or surveys,

And vote to remove the mandatory school uniform requirement.

We urge the district to prioritize student comfort, freedom of expression, and equity in its policies. Thank you for considering this request.

Sincerely,
