petition to end poverty: support lasting solutions for economic equality and opportunity

The Issue

Poverty is one of the most persistent and debilitating issues that face human society today. Despite huge steps taken in almost all other aspects, many people face respective living conditions that stop them from accessing basic necessities of dignified living. Poverty is not just an issue of mere lack of money; it is fundamentally an issue of the deprivation of choice. Poor people cannot permanently access essential resources such as education, health, and job opportunities-that would break the cycle of deprivation. This petition must definitely speak to sustainable solutions that ensure every person has equal opportunity to thrive, especially for those placed under the most devastating levels of economic inequality.

Over 16 million subjects live below the poverty line in the Philippines. Poverty lines cannot satisfy their most basic needs. Lockdowns have widened this gap with the many consequences of COVID-19, pushing millions into poverty and making family stability a tall challenge to regain. Poverty is not just about having no money; it is also a significant obstacle to getting quality education, healthcare, and better employment opportunities.

For a vast majority, the pursuit of a respectable livelihood has become a daily struggle. In most urban centers with high living costs, the level of minimum wages is too low. Provision of health care remains too expensive and inaccessible for the most vulnerable members of society, whereas education, however crucial for societal productivity, still remains unaffordable for most people due to economic factors. Furthermore, the lack of affordable housing keeps pushing millions into informal settlements, where their access to basic services such as clean water, sanitation, and security is still limited.

Women, children, and disadvantaged populations in rural areas and indigenous communities face profoundly high levels of inequality, and face hurdles toward accessing essential opportunities. These profound inequalities sustain a trap that seems almost impossible to break out of, trapping generations galore in an apparently endless cycle of survival, struggle, and self-destruction. It is most crucial to start moving as soon as possible. Solutions must therefore be designed to address the root causes of economic inequality and to provide long-term change. For this reason, we call on the government of the Philippines and its policymakers to take active leadership in this effort:

  • Therefore, diligent labor needs to be economically secured by increasing the minimum wage to an extent that would accurately represent the real cost of living.
  • Resource allocation toward education to make sure every Filipino child receives first-rate learning opportunities regardless of his or her class.
  • Expanding access to healthcare by making it affordable and accessible to all, especially for the most vulnerable populations.
  • Create more new job opportunities and help everyone, including the poor and marginalized, share in the country's economic growth.
  • The construction of affordable housing aims to establish stable living environments for families while concurrently decreasing dependence on informal settlements.

By signing below, you join the collective movement to call for fundamental change for Filipinos-many of whom have been omitted for too long. This endorsement will have a loud and clear voice telling policymakers that its citizens of the Philippines want long-term solutions to poverty and economic inequity. Circulate this petition among your family, friends, and colleagues to raise awareness and inspire action. Together, more equal and fair Philippines will be built; everyone will find the chance to succeed. Now, you can become an economic advocate for justice and equality as you sign the petition.
