The Issue

The Problem

Every year, millions of cats, dogs, and other companion animals are euthanized in “kill shelters” across the United States. Many of these animals are healthy, loving, and fully adoptable—they simply ran out of time, space, or resources.

These animals are not “unwanted.” They are victims of an overwhelmed and outdated system that views killing as a form of population control rather than investing in humane alternatives such as no-kill shelters, foster programs, spay/neuter initiatives, and public education.

The lives being lost are not statistics. They are family members waiting for love, comfort, and a chance.

Our Mission

We, the undersigned, are demanding an end to kill shelters nationwide.

No animal should die simply because they were born homeless or abandoned.

We call for:

1. Transitioning all municipal shelters to no-kill operations — defined as a 90% or higher live-release rate.

2. Expanding funding and grants for low-cost spay/neuter programs to prevent overpopulation humanely.

3. Developing foster networks to house animals temporarily instead of resorting to euthanasia.

4. Increasing adoption incentives and outreach through community events, social media, and education.

5. Promoting transparency and accountability by requiring shelters to publicly report intake, adoption, and euthanasia data.

6. Encouraging partnerships between local shelters, rescues, and animal welfare groups to share resources and save more lives.

Why It Matters

Animals bring love, companionship, and emotional healing into our lives. They feel pain, fear, and joy—just like us. Ending kill shelters is not just about saving animals; it’s about embracing compassion as a community value.

We believe that with proper funding, collaboration, and education, a no-kill nation is possible. Other cities have done it—Austin, Texas, and Charlottesville, Virginia, are living proof.

It’s time the rest of the country followed their lead.

Our Promise

By signing this petition, we stand for mercy, compassion, and justice for animals who cannot speak for themselves. We urge lawmakers and communities to make the humane choice—to end kill shelters once and for all and replace them with systems rooted in love, care, and responsibility.
