Petition to End EA's Exclusivity Rights to the NFL and Madden Franchise
The Issue
As a passionate Madden player and football enthusiast since the early 2000s, I have witnessed the drastic decline in the quality of Madden NFL games. I have played Madden since I was a young child, experiencing the once feature-rich and innovative franchise mode and state-of-the-art gameplay. However, since Electronic Arts (EA) obtained the exclusivity rights to the NFL, the Madden franchise has spiraled downward.
In 2004, Electronic Arts, the publisher of the Madden football video game series, signed a 10-year exclusivity deal to secure the exclusive rights to produce NFL and NFLPA-licensed video games on consoles. This agreement caused the end of several football franchises, including the NFL2K series. The reasoning behind the exclusive licensing agreement was to have one developer accurately portraying the NFL in the best possible way; however, EA has yet to fulfill that promise, and the series has continued to separate itself further from the game of football each year.
Reasons for the Petition -
Stagnant Gameplay and Features:
Animations from Madden 2012 are still present in current versions of the game, demonstrating a lack of innovation and progress.
Franchise mode, once a cornerstone of Madden, has seen minimal improvements and updates, leaving fans disappointed and frustrated.
Lack of Attention to Detail:
Madden and Electronic Arts lack the intricate details that make football games immersive and realistic. Players expect a game that captures the nuances of the sport they love, but Madden consistently falls short.
The game relies heavily on outdated animation technology rather than embracing modern physics-based actions, resulting in a less dynamic and realistic experience.
EA has failed to accurately represent the unique presentations of the various networks that broadcast NFL games, such as CBS, Fox, NBC, and ESPN. Major NFL events, such as Free Agency, the NFL Draft, and the NFL Kickoff, are poorly represented in the game.
Outdated Game Engine:
In an era where game engines are capable of creating incredible human dynamics with advanced physics, Madden continues to use the Frostbite engine, which is over a decade old.
The refusal to upgrade to a more advanced engine limits the potential for innovation and realism in the game.
Gameplay Issues:
The gameplay of the Madden series continues to lag behind the current state of the NFL, with countless "bugs" and "glitches" making the game almost unplayable at times.
EA takes 2-3 months to release patches to fix issues, which often create additional problems.
Basic concepts of football, such as offensive and defensive line interactions, defensive stunts, double-teaming, 2-gap blocking, the 3-4 defensive system, penalties, coaches' challenges, and accurate playbooks, are poorly implemented or missing.
Madden Ultimate Team (MUT) Issues:
MUT, designed to allow fans to collect star players and compete in various modes, has become a money-making scheme for EA, forcing users to spend real money to unlock specific cards and collectibles.
EA focuses more on MUT than on other aspects of the game, neglecting the franchise mode and other features that consumers care about.
The Call for Change:
It is time for EA to lose its exclusivity rights to the NFL and the Madden franchise. The monopoly held by EA stifles competition, leading to complacency and a lack of motivation to improve the game. By opening up the NFL licensing to other game developers, we can encourage innovation, competition, and ultimately, a better gaming experience for all Madden and NFL lovers.
We, the undersigned, urge the NFL to reconsider its exclusive partnership with EA and allow other game developers the opportunity to create NFL games. This change will not only benefit the gaming community but also enhance the overall representation of the sport we love.
Join us in demanding better for Madden and NFL fans. Sign this petition to end EA's exclusivity rights and bring back the excitement and innovation that Madden NFL games once provided.
