The Issue

Written by the Committee to Elect Marcus Coward:

The City Council should not appoint the most politically connected applicant to the New Bedford School Committee. Like the majority of the School Committee, they should appoint the candidate who has earned public trust, brings a needed perspective, demonstrates strong character, and has already been endorsed by thousands of New Bedford voters.

That candidate is Marcus Coward.

Marcus works directly with New Bedford youth and has a proven record of community engagement, listening closely to students and educators about the challenges and needs in our schools and community, and brings a youth perspective that is missing from decision-making.

School finance can be learned. Character cannot. Marcus has stood with the community for social justice, demonstrating unwavering commitment and integrity

Thousands of New Bedford residents supported Marcus in November at the ballot box. That level of public support is clear, meaningful feedback—and it should guide this appointment.

We, the people of New Bedford, urge the City Council to join the majority of the School Committee to appoint Marcus Coward.

Sign this petition to join in supporting Marcus Coward in getting elected to the School Committee by the Joint Committee: comprised of the Mayor, City Council, and School Committee. The vote is scheduled to take place at 7pm on Wednesday, January 21st, 2026, at City Hall in New Bedford. We ask all who are able to come out that night to see the verdict live for yourselves!
