Petition to Condemn Unwarranted Personal Attacks on Esteemed Academicians

We, the undersigned academicians, researchers, and citizens who value scientific discourse and the dignity of educational institutions, write this petition to express our deep disappointment and unequivocal condemnation of the recent remarks made by members of parliament, specifically Shri Rahul Gandhi and Smt. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, targeting India's academic community.
During a recent parliamentary debate concerning the critical issue of examination reforms, Smt. Priyanka Gandhi referred to Professor V. Kamakoti, the esteemed Director of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, as a “gaumutra (cow urine) expert”. Professor Kamakoti is a distinguished scientist, holding MS and Ph.D. degrees from IIT Madras, with over 150 published research papers, and played a pivotal role in developing India’s first industry-grade microprocessor. Reducing his vast academic contributions to a mocking label while he was appointed to a task force to solve national examination issues is unacceptable.
Furthermore, we are disturbed by the direct threats articulated by Shri Rahul Gandhi against university administrators on issuing the advisories, advising students to stay away from becoming part of an unlawful assembly or activity, Shri Gandhi not only criticized the institutions but issued a direct warning and threatened university administration, declaring, " We will see when our time comes!". The sweeping generalizations impugn the character, academic rigor, and professional integrity of hundreds of vice-chancellors leading central and state universities.
Using the prospect of future political power to threaten academic administrators for carrying out their duty to maintain campus safety and comply with legal directives is an unprecedented attack on the autonomy and stability of our higher education institutions creates a deeply coercive environment.
Disagreements regarding educational reform are a natural part of a vibrant democracy. However, labeling esteemed scientists with derogatory terms and threatening university administrators with politically motivated retribution damages the dignity of scholars and undermines institutional autonomy.
When political leaders use public platforms to ridicule scientists and brand university administrators as political agents, it creates an atmosphere of cynicism and mistrust among students. Universities must remain spaces where education and administration are insulated from vindictive partisan politics and overt political threats.
The Parliament of India is the highest forum for debate in our nation. It is expected that its members maintain a standard of decorum and focus their criticisms on policy, substance, and governance. Using these platforms to launch personal attacks and issue sweeping political threats against individuals carrying out their administrative duties lowers the quality of public discourse and sets a dangerous precedent of political intimidation.
We demand Smt. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Shri Rahul Gandhi to retract their disparaging remarks and issue public apologies to Professor V. Kamakoti, the Vice-Chancellors of Indian universities, and the broader academic community. We further demand an immediate retraction of any statements threatening politically motivated retribution against academic leadership. Political leaders across the spectrum should maintain a respectful tone when discussing academics, scientists, and experts, focusing on their professional contributions rather than resorting to personal ridicule.
We also urge the Hon’ble Speaker of the Lok Sabha to ensure that parliamentary proceedings remain a space for dignified debate and that unwarranted personal attacks against esteemed academicians and public servants are expunged from the record.
The progress of our nation relies heavily on the dedication and expertise of our academicians. Subjecting them to political grandstanding, public humiliation, and threats of partisan reprisal discourages scholars from participating in vital public roles. Let us foster a culture where the scholars and administrators behind our institutions are treated with the respect, autonomy, and professional security they deserve.
