Petition Calling for Reconsideration of Dutch State Visit to Kenya: Stand for Human Rights

The Issue

We, the undersigned, submit this petition to express our deep and urgent concerns about the planned royal visit of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands to Kenya in March 2025. This visit should NOT proceed while Kenya's current administration, led by President William Ruto, continues to violate fundamental human rights and undermine democratic principles.

We urge the following:

Cancel or Reconsider the Royal Visit

We request that the Dutch royal family reconsider or cancel their planned visit to Kenya in March 2025 given the current political climate under the leadership of William Ruto. The visit risks legitimizing a regime with a troubling record on human rights, governance, and accountability.

Address Human Rights Violations and Abductions by the Government

Citizens, activists and protesters have faced increasing harassment. Many have been subjected to arbitrary arrests, unlawful detention, and physical abuse simply for exercising their right to protest or voice opposition to government policies. The right to free speech and the right to demonstrate is a cornerstone of any democratic society, and it is alarming that individuals who speak out against the government face such dangers.

Re-evaluate Ties with a Leader Linked to Crimes Against Humanity at the ICC

William Ruto’s past involvement with the International Criminal Court (ICC) concerning crimes committed during the 2007-2008 post-election violence raises serious concerns. The unresolved questions surrounding his role in the violence have not been addressed in a way that instills confidence in his commitment to peace, justice, and accountability. It is crucial that the Netherlands critically assess the implications of engaging with a leader who has been, and in recent days still is being linked to such serious allegations that violate human rights.

Why this is important for the people of Kenya and why it should matter to the Dutch government:

By speaking out strongly against human rights abuses, the Dutch government can lead by example, demonstrating its commitment to engaging selectively with governments that uphold the fundamental rights of their citizens

Reconsidering the state visit would send a powerful message to the Kenyan population—70% of whom are under 30—that their human rights are valued and that the international community is watching closely. This action would also encourage the Kenyan government to reconsider its policies and strive for meaningful reforms that offer the Kenyan people a better future.

We acknowledge and are aware that the Netherlands is one of Kenya's primary trading partners, with bilateral trade reaching €140.1 billion in 2021. While economic ties are important, it is equally essential to recognize that taking a stand on human rights is both a moral duty and a key factor in preserving a strong and sustainable trade relationship—now and in the future. After all, no meaningful trade can occur if 70% of a population sees no future in their own country, is being abducted, or is facing violence.

We call on everyone committed to the protection of human rights, the rule of law, and democracy—including the Dutch government and the royal family—to stand on the right side of history.
