Petition to Approve the Legacy Mural at Young Woods Elementary

The Issue

To City Officials and Decision-Makers,

We, the undersigned, urge the approval of the Legacy Mural Project at Young Woods Elementary School. This meaningful tribute will honor three leaders who shaped South Providence and deserve recognition in the community they served:

Charlotte Woods – A dedicated community leader and civil rights activist who supported families and strengthened South Providence.

B. Jae Clanton – A fearless civil rights leader and former head of the Rhode Island Urban League, who fought for equity, housing rights, and support for underserved communities.

Sgt. Cornel Young, Jr. – A Providence Police Officer who dedicated his life to protecting his community, mentoring youth, and building relationships.

These individuals left a lasting impact on our city. This mural will be a symbol of social justice, education, and community pride.

📢 Why This Mural Matters: Young Woods Elementary was named after these leaders in 2001, yet their contributions are not visibly recognized in the school or community. The Legacy Mural will:

✅ Honor these leaders and their families by preserving their legacies for future generations.
✅ Educate students and residents about the history of South Providence.
✅ Provide a visual tribute to social justice and activism.
✅ Unite students, families, and artists to create meaningful public art.

🤍 We Urge Your Support: We urge city officials and school leaders to approve this long-awaited project so our community can honor these legacies and inspire future generations.

🎨 Together, We Can Make This Mural Happen! By signing, you support preserving South Providence’s history and ensuring these leaders’ stories are not forgotten.

Let’s work together to bring the Legacy Mural to life!
