Nearing 5,000 signatures!
I have found that posting our website address to local birding listservs appears to be less controversial than posting the actual petition site. I have been posting a brief message regarding the site and my posts have received zero pushback. Worth a try if your listserv still has not had information about the petition made public (Georgia anyone?) Here is the link to the website: https://birdnamesforstability.org
And another new piece has been added to our website. I have posted a YouTube video of Kevin Winker's talk that was presented at the American Ornithological Society and Society of Canadian Ornithologists meeting in August 2023 (prior to the AOS announcement.) It's on the unpopularity of changing all eponymous bird names, and it summarizes the two recent papers he wrote on this subject. It is about 16 minutes long and worth a listen and also worth sharing. Here is the link. Kevin Winker: Talk on the Unpopularity of Changing all Eponymous Bird Names https://youtu.be/H0qe3KG90K8
Kevin's papers are also worth reading and sharing:
Winker, K. 2023. Bird names as critical communication infrastructure in the contexts of history, language, and culture. In review. Preprint here: https://osf.io/34bg7/
Winker, K. 2023. The inordinate unpopularity of changing all eponymous bird and other organismal names. In review. Preprint here: https://osf.io/tnzya/
Thanks again to all of you that have supported the petition. At the beginning, 5,000 signatures seemed unlikely to me but now I think we can achieve it.
Please keep sharing. We can get there.
