🐾 PETITION: STOP PUNISHING ANIMALS FOR NOT HAVING A PLACE TO LIVE!
The Issue
Demand More Pet-Friendly Housing, Fair Rental Policies, and Action to Reduce Overcrowded Animal Shelters!
PETS ARE FAMILY — NOT DISPOSABLE!
Every year, millions of innocent dogs and cats enter animal shelters across the United States. Many are frightened, confused, and separated from the only families they have ever known.
Some animals are surrendered because their owners can no longer find affordable housing that allows pets.
Others remain in overcrowded shelters, waiting for a second chance that may never come.
THIS NEEDS TO STOP!
THE FACTS: ANIMALS ARE PAYING THE PRICE
According to Shelter Animals Count’s 2026 mid-year report:
3.68 MILLION dogs and cats entered U.S. shelters and rescues during the first six months of 2026.
266,000 dogs and cats were euthanized during that same six-month period.
213,000 more animals entered care than left, increasing pressure on shelters and rescues.
7.41 MILLION shelter and rescue intakes were projected for the full year, including transfers.
THAT IS APPROXIMATELY 1,470 DOGS AND CATS EUTHANIZED EVERY DAY DURING THE FIRST HALF OF 2026.
These are not just numbers. They represent living animals that deserve compassion, protection, and the opportunity to be loved.
HOUSING RESTRICTIONS ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM
Research examining animal shelter intake records from 21 U.S. shelters between 2019 and 2023 found:
14% of shelter intakes in the analyzed data were associated with housing-related issues.
27% of housing-related relinquishments involved pet restrictions.
8% of housing-related relinquishments involved landlord issues.
These findings show that housing barriers contribute to animals losing their homes.
An ASPCA survey also identified housing problems as a leading reason for pet rehoming among renters who had given up an animal.
WE CANNOT KEEP ENCOURAGING PEOPLE TO ADOPT ANIMALS WHILE MAKING IT DIFFICULT FOR THEM TO KEEP THOSE ANIMALS!
IMAGINE HAVING TO CHOOSE BETWEEN YOUR HOME AND YOUR PET
Imagine raising a dog for ten years, only to discover that your next apartment does not allow dogs.
Imagine being told your cat cannot move with you because of a strict no-pet policy.
Imagine being unable to afford hundreds of dollars in pet deposits and additional monthly rent.
Now imagine taking your beloved companion to an animal shelter, knowing you may never see them again.
NO RESPONSIBLE PET OWNER SHOULD BE FORCED INTO THAT DECISION BECAUSE OF UNNECESSARILY RESTRICTIVE HOUSING POLICIES.
Animals do not understand leases, rental agreements, or housing restrictions.
They only know that the family they love is suddenly gone.
WE ARE DEMANDING REAL CHANGE!
We call on landlords, property management companies, housing developers, businesses, and lawmakers to take action.
1. MORE PET-FRIENDLY HOUSING
Expand the number of apartments, rental homes, and affordable housing communities that welcome responsible pet owners.
2. END UNNECESSARY BREED AND WEIGHT RESTRICTIONS
Evaluate animals based on their individual behavior rather than blanket assumptions about their breed or size.
3. MAKE PET FEES FAIR AND AFFORDABLE
Reduce excessive pet deposits, monthly pet rent, and other financial barriers that prevent families from keeping their animals.
4. EXPAND PET-FRIENDLY PUBLIC SPACES
Encourage more businesses, parks, and community spaces to welcome pets where it is safe and appropriate.
5. PREVENT UNNECESSARY ANIMAL SURRENDERS
Support temporary fostering, pet food assistance, affordable veterinary care, and programs that help families keep their animals during financial or housing emergencies.
6. SUPPORT RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP
Create reasonable policies that protect property owners, neighbors, and animals without automatically excluding responsible pet owners.
OUR SHELTERS CANNOT SOLVE THIS CRISIS ALONE!
Shelters and rescue organizations are already working under enormous pressure.
Volunteers, foster families, veterinary teams, and animal care workers are doing everything possible to give homeless animals another chance.
But we cannot continue placing the entire responsibility on shelters while ignoring preventable reasons animals are surrendered.
EVERY ANIMAL KEPT SAFELY WITH ITS FAMILY IS ONE LESS ANIMAL THAT NEEDS A SHELTER KENNEL.
Not every shelter euthanasia is caused by housing restrictions. However, reducing unnecessary housing-related surrenders can help relieve shelter overcrowding and protect more animals.
THE TIME TO ACT IS NOW!
In just six months of 2026, approximately 266,000 dogs and cats were euthanized in U.S. shelters.
How many more animals must lose their lives before we take meaningful action?
How many more families must surrender beloved pets?
How many more shelters must struggle with overcrowding?
WE NEED SOLUTIONS — NOT MORE EXCUSES!
Pet-friendly housing is not just about convenience.
It is about keeping families together, preventing unnecessary suffering, and reducing the number of animals entering overwhelmed shelters.
🐾 SIGN THIS PETITION AND HELP SAVE LIVES!
We demand more compassionate housing policies that recognize the importance of pets in our families and communities.
