The Issue

We, the undersigned parents, residents, and community members formally submit this petition to voice our strong opposition to the proposed closure of Amparo Gutierrez Elementary School.

We urge the Board to reconsider this decision and explore alternative solutions that prioritize the well-being of our students and the integrity of our neighborhood.

1. Maintaining Educational Stability

Elementary school is the foundation of a child's academic journey. For the students at Gutierrez Elementary, this school is a "second home" where they have built essential bonds with teachers and peers. Research shows that school closures can lead to:

• Interrupted Learning: Sudden transitions often result in a temporary drop in academic performance.

• Emotional Stress: Children thrive on routine; displacing them from a familiar environment can cause unnecessary anxiety and social upheaval.

2. The Heart of Our Community

Amparo Gutierrez Elementary is more than just a building; it is a community hub. Many of our families have sent multiple generations to this school. Closing it doesn't just move students—it tears the social fabric of our neighborhood. A local school ensures that:

• Walkability remains high: Parents can easily engage in school activities, and many students benefit from being within walking distance.

• Property values stay stable: Schools are a primary driver for neighborhood investment and family residency.

3. Support for Vulnerable Students

Our school serves a diverse population, including many families who rely on the specific bilingual programs and specialized support services offered at Gutierrez. Moving these students to larger, overcrowded campuses could dilute the personalized attention they currently receive, disproportionately affecting those who need the most support.

4. Call to Action

We understand the district faces budgetary and enrollment challenges, but we believe the "cost" of closing Gutierrez Elementary—measured in student success and community spirit—is far too high. We ask the Board to:

• Halt the closure process immediately.

• Conduct a public town hall specifically for Gutierrez families to propose alternative cost-saving measures.

• Prioritize the "Small School" advantage that makes Gutierrez a unique and effective learning environment.

By signing this petition, we stand together to protect our children's future and keep Amparo Gutierrez Elementary open.
