Good Day, Bahlali
When we came together to stop the DTIC’s ill-conceived Credit Regulations, we proved that ordinary citizens can make a big difference when they’re informed and assisted to participate in public processes.
That spirit, of active, informed, collective action, has now grown into something bigger.
Today, I’m proud to share that we are launching The Better Governance Initiative NPC (“BGI”). It is our new, non-partisan, citizen-driven civil society organisation dedicated to strengthening democracy and improving governance through sustained active citizenry across our country.
We are now channelling the same energy that made the petition successful into deeper civic action: supporting accountability, rebuilding trust, and fixing what’s broken.
Critically, for each signatory, this step is particularly important as it will also assist us in more effectively fighting that government not only abandons their previous plans. They must also change the current Credit laws that enable blacklisting for student debts, and fundamentally rethink the regulation of credit and how to transformatively enable access to finance.
I’ve written an Open Letter to fully explain what BGI is about, the work we’ve already been doing, and how you can be part of this next chapter.
Read it here: https://fightingforbetter.substack.com/p/the-better-governance-initiative
You can also get other information about BGI on our website (www.bettergovernance.org.za and please do follow us on @bettergovza across al major platforms.
Mhlali, this is just the beginning, but it is a very important one. Together, we have proven what we can achieve when we work collectively to fight for what’s right. I encourage you to keep showing what’s possible when citizens stand together.

Sabelo Chalufu
