The Issue

Petition Regarding the Planned Closure of the Natchez Trace Parkway Between Kosciusko and French Camp, Mississippi

To Whom It May Concern:

We, the undersigned residents, business owners, parents, students, employees, and visitors of Attala and Choctaw Counties, respectfully express our concerns regarding the planned closure of the Natchez Trace Parkway between Kosciusko, Mississippi, and French Camp, Mississippi, for an estimated period of one year due to bridge repairs.

While we understand the importance of maintaining safe infrastructure and support necessary repairs, the length and scope of this closure will have a significant impact on the communities that depend on this corridor for daily travel, education, commerce, and tourism.

Community Concerns

Economic Impact on Local Businesses

French Camp and surrounding communities rely heavily on travelers who use the Natchez Trace Parkway. A year-long closure will divert traffic away from local businesses, restaurants, lodging establishments, retail stores, and service providers. Reduced visitor traffic may result in substantial revenue losses, threatening the livelihoods of business owners and employees.

Impact on Students and Families

Students attending French Camp Academy and other educational institutions will be required to travel alternate routes that significantly increase commute times. Families will face additional transportation costs, scheduling challenges, and time away from work and family responsibilities.

Increased Financial Burden

Residents who regularly travel between Kosciusko, French Camp, and surrounding areas will be forced to drive longer distances. This will increase fuel consumption, vehicle wear and tear, maintenance expenses, and overall transportation costs at a time when many families are already facing financial pressures.

Public Safety Concerns

Longer routes may increase response times for emergency services and place additional traffic on local roads that were not designed to accommodate the volume of vehicles that will be diverted from the Parkway.

Tourism Impact

The Natchez Trace Parkway is a major tourism route that attracts visitors from across the nation. The closure may discourage travelers from visiting French Camp and nearby communities, resulting in lost tourism revenue and economic opportunities.

Our Request

We respectfully request that the National Park Service and all responsible agencies:

Explore options to reduce the duration of the closure whenever possible.
Evaluate whether phased construction, temporary access routes, or partial openings can be implemented to maintain some level of connectivity.
Conduct and publicly share an economic impact assessment of the closure on affected communities.
Work with local governments, businesses, and schools to develop mitigation strategies.
Provide clear and frequent updates regarding project timelines and progress.
Consider financial assistance or economic support programs for businesses that experience significant losses due to the extended closure.
The Natchez Trace Parkway is more than a scenic roadway. It serves as a critical transportation corridor that connects communities, supports local businesses, provides access to education, and contributes to the economic vitality of this region.

We respectfully ask decision-makers to consider the substantial impact this closure will have on the people who live, work, attend school, and operate businesses along this section of the Parkway.

Thank you for your attention to this matter and for considering solutions that balance necessary infrastructure improvements with the needs of the communities affected.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned Citizens, Business Owners, Parents, Students, and Supporters of the Kosciusko and French Camp Communities
