Petition President Obama - Union Carbide / DOW Must Clean Up Their Mess in Bhopal, India
This petition had 1,260 supporters
On Dec 3, 1984 in Bhopal, India, an american owned Union Carbide factory leaked a toxic gas which swept the surrounding community and killed 10,000 people. Upwards of 100,000 were injured and today the suffering continues amongst survivors and their children who are being born with debilitating birth defects.
After the disaster, the factory was abandoned by Union Carbide, and the chemical waste was left on the premises. For the past 26 years, this waste has poisoned the groundwater of the surrounding community, which 30,000 people depend on as their only source of water. Union Carbide claims this pollution problem is not their responsibility.
Just as BP was pressured to clean up the gulf, Union Carbide needs the same pressure to clean up Bhopal. Please ask President Obama to help the people of Bhopal by forcing Union Carbide, now owned by DOW Chemical, to clean up their toxic waste and take responsibility for the disaster they caused.
