Petition: People Are Fighting To Survive on the Streets, While the State Looks Away

The Issue

Greece cannot call itself "a modern European country" while thousands of people sleep on its' streets every single night.

For years, homelessness has hung over Greece like fog -always there, always seen, always ignored.
But behind every body curled on cardboard… behind every hand reaching into a trash bin… behind every silent figure sitting on a cold marble step… there is a story: a job lost, a home unsafe, an illness untreated, a trauma unrecognized, a system that abandoned them long before the streets did.

Homelessness in Greece is not a choice, it's a result. A result of poverty, unemployment, addiction, violence, mental-health breakdowns, and a state that looks away at the exact moment people need it most.

THE REALITY WE KEEP AVOIDING
Homelessness in Greece is rising, not shrinking.
Many are the “new homeless”: people who once had stable lives until one crisis pushed them over the edge.
Greece has no national long-term housing strategy -only scattered, temporary solutions.
For homeless individuals, access to therapy or rehab is almost impossible. Existing shelters are overcrowded, understaffed, and in some cases unsafe. People are dying on the streets -quiet deaths, witnessed by no one. This is not a crisis. This is a national emergency.

WE DEMAND IMMEDIATE, STRUCTURAL ACTION
1. Housing First, Nationwide
Stable, long-term housing with professional support -the only model proven to end homelessness sustainably.

2. Safe, Dignified Shelters in Every Major City
Clean spaces, trained staff, trauma-informed care, no one turned away.

3. Mobile Mental Health & Addiction Teams
Crisis professionals who go to the streets, not clipboards behind closed doors.

4. Steady Government Funding for NGOs
The organisations doing the actual work need long-term financing -not seasonal charity.

5. Emergency ID & Documentation Services
No person should remain homeless because they lost their wallet.

6. A National Homelessness Registry
Data, transparency, accountability.
Without numbers, there is no policy -only excuses.

WHY THIS MATTERS
A country is defined not by its' monuments or its' myths, but by the people it refuses to abandon.

Greece is proud of "filotimo" -honour expressed in action, compassion that is lived, not spoken.
But there is nothing honourable, about walking past human beings freezing on pavements while officials debate “timelines.”

Homelessness is not a personal failure.
It is evidence of a system failing its' people.

And every day we ignore it, that failure grows.

WE WILL NOT LOOK AWAY ANY LONGER

“I see you.”
“You deserve safety.”

If thousands of us stand together, change stops being optional -it becomes unavoidable.
