The Issue

Introduction

We, the undersigned residents, neighbors, and community members, respectfully petition the City of Raleigh/Wake County to deny approval of the proposed Six Forks development project. While we support thoughtful and sustainable growth, we strongly believe this project, as currently proposed, will cause long-term harm to the livability, safety, and character of our neighborhoods.

Key Concerns

1. Traffic & Safety
The Six Forks corridor is already heavily congested, with daily bottlenecks and limited safe pedestrian crossings. Adding significant new development will worsen traffic conditions, increase commuter delays, and put both drivers and pedestrians at greater risk. The proximity of the proposed development to blind curves, busy intersections, and high-crash segments further compounds these concerns.

2. Environmental Impact
The proposed development threatens to reduce already-limited green space and tree canopy in our community. Increased impervious surfaces will exacerbate stormwater runoff and flooding. Noise, light pollution, and loss of wildlife habitat will further erode the environmental quality and resilience of our neighborhood.

3. Strain on Infrastructure & Services
Local schools, roads, and utilities are already under strain. The proposed development will place additional burdens on these essential services, potentially reducing quality and accessibility for existing residents.

4. Neighborhood Character
Our community values its unique character, history, and sense of place. This development introduces density, scale, and building types incompatible with the established neighborhood, threatening the identity, cohesion, and long-term stability of our community.

Our Request

We respectfully request that the City of Raleigh/Wake County:

Deny approval of the Six Forks development as currently proposed.
Engage residents in meaningful dialogue about sustainable alternatives for growth that better reflect the needs and values of the community.
Prioritize planning that preserves safety, environmental quality, and neighborhood character.

Closing Statement

Responsible development should enhance, not endanger, the communities it touches. We urge decision-makers to stand with residents in protecting the integrity of the Six Forks corridor and to pursue more thoughtful, balanced approaches to growth.

Thank you for reaching out. I’ve been in touch with several of your neighbors, and one resident spoke at my community meeting last week about this case. I completely understand your concerns and agree with many of the points raised. Because of the Missing Middle text change passed in 2021–2022, projects along a Frequent Transit Corridor are reviewed and approved by staff and do not come before Council. I have not been a fan of the Missing Middle policy and have tried to change it, but the votes have not been there. While Council cannot stop this case, I will continue to reach out to staff to see whether there are alternate possibilities or mitigations within the current process. To help me advocate effectively, please email me your specific, documentable concerns (e.g., stormwater, traffic/safety, trees, construction impacts). I will compile and forward them to the reviewing staff and ask for written responses where possible. I’ll also share any updates I receive through my community meeting and communications so you know where things stand. Thank you again for engaging with me on this.
