DPW intends to start work in the tree lawn!

Thank you all.  Here an important message. Late today (Friday, July 10), Christian Maier of the Shaker Heights DPW emailed a handful of neighbors the quote below.  Please read it. The information is also posted on a webpage that many people are unable to access from the link provided in writing by Christian Maier at the June 18 meeting. Here is the site:

"All,
Prior to any excavation, contractors are required to contact the Ohio Utility Protection Service (OUPS) to locate and mark underground utilities. Despite repeated attempts by the dewatering contractor, OUPS has been non-responsive. As such, minimal work related to dewatering occurred this week.
The dewatering contractor has proposed to install the wells in the alignment of proposed sewer instead of the road as previous discussed. Given all the underground utilities in the road, there was a risk of drilling the casing pipe through the existing utilities. The spacing along the alignment will remain to be 50-feet (+/-)."

(I added the bold to the text). My reaction: Why is the contractor making decisions about the TREELAWN when the approval to do the work there has not been granted by the EPA? Did the city revise the contractor's contract with marching orders to open cut excavate?  Shaker residents have been waiting for the contracts and amendments to be produced by the City of Shaker Heights from our public records requests and it still has not happened. They are legally required to fulfill requests in a "reasonable time period."

Why not wait for the OUPS information? Is dewatering in the tree lawn meant to damage all the trees' roots so that they can say they are ALL in danger and must be removed? Dewatering in our historic and environmentally important tree lawn is premature to EPA AND community approval.  

Residents' meeting to share concerns and next steps is  Sunday, July 12 at the Shaker Heights Public Library, Main Branch at 1pm.
