The Issue

Northwest is a Cal Ripken / Babe Ruth Sanctioned recreational league serving all of Kern County.  While many of our youth come from the North and East sides of the Bakersfield, we attract players from all corners of the county – from Delano to Kernville and everywhere in between.  Serving over two thousand youth annually, ranging in age from 4 through 16, we serve complete beginners through seasoned ball players. The recreational baseball that we offer through the Metro Complex gives kids and families a safe place to grow and compete, protected from many of the issues we all see plaguing youth sports throughout our country.  Whether MLB stars Colby Lewis and Cy-Young winner Corbin Burnes, or the neighbor next door, Northwest Bakersfield Baseball has positively impacted our entire community.

As the leaseholder for nearly 3 decades, Northwest has reinvested more than $1.25 million into the property through lighting, concrete, fencing, dugouts, shade structures, and additional fields.  All the while, Northwest has managed 100% of the maintenance and upkeep costs of the 24-acre facility.  In September of last year Kern County Property Management decided the lease would be going out to bid through the RFP process. The RFP was initiated in December of last year and submissions were due by January 30th of this year. On February 24th we were told the RFP recommendation for the lease was going to another party.  With the loss of the lease comes the very real threat to the capacity Northwest currently has to serve the kids and families we have faithfully served since 1988 (since 1997 in the current location). Please show your support by signing our petition. Please show the county that the Metro Complex belongs in the capable hands of those ensuring quality baseball and a safe family atmosphere is available for all kids in our community. Thanks!

We, the undersigned members of the Kern County communities, respectfully support NWBBA and its continued use of its long-established facility. For the last 29 years, the league has provided affordable and character-building opportunities to local youth, including underprivileged children. We respectfully request that the Kern County Board of Supervisors reestablish the lease with NWBBA.
