Petition in Support of Jones Avenue Cycling Infrastructure and Upgrades
The Issue
We, the undersigned, are proud to show our support for the City of Toronto’s plan to upgrade and expand its cycling infrastructure, particularly the much-needed improvements to the Jones Avenue bike lanes. These upgrades are not only a step toward creating safer streets but also a way to make our neighborhood more welcoming, sustainable, and accessible for everyone. Existing 'bike lanes' area nothing more than painted lanes in between traffic and parked cars which pose risk of being 'doored'.
As residents of Leslieville, we know that biking is an affordable and efficient way for people to get around, whether they’re commuting to work, running errands, or enjoying the beauty of our neighborhood. Safe and well-designed bike lanes make it easier for cyclists of all ages and abilities to get where they need to go – without worrying about being clipped by a car or unexpected door. For families, seniors, students, and workers alike, biking offers a simple and sustainable way to connect with the community.
But the benefits of improved bike lanes go beyond cyclists. Research shows that well-designed cycling infrastructure can have a positive impact on local businesses. A 2012 study by the Ontario Traffic Council found that businesses located near bike lanes experience a 49% increase in customer visits. Safer, more accessible bike lanes will help make Leslieville a more vibrant, pedestrian-friendly neighborhood, which in turn supports our local economy. Local shops, cafes, and restaurants will see increased foot traffic, leading to greater business success and a stronger sense of community.
Upgrading the Jones Avenue bike lanes aligns with Toronto’s broader goals of increasing sustainability, reducing traffic congestion, and improving air quality. It also supports the City’s Vision Zero initiative to eliminate traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries. By investing in safe, protected bike lanes, we are investing in a future that prioritizes public health and safety.
Now, more than ever, we need our community’s support to make these changes happen. Upgrading the bike lanes on Jones Avenue will not only create safer routes for cyclists but will also help build a more connected and sustainable neighborhood. We’re excited about the potential these bike lanes hold for Leslieville and beyond, and we’re asking the City of Toronto to continue moving forward with this important plan.
Please join us in showing your support for these upgrades by signing this petition.
