Petition in Support of Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library's Inclusive Programming
The Issue
To: Zionsville Town Council, Library Board, and Community
We, the undersigned residents and supporters of Zionsville's Public Library, affirm our strong support for the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library and its commitment to serving all members of our community with dignity, respect, and inclusion. The library’s mission—to provide access to knowledge, culture, and community for everyone—is a cornerstone of a free and open society. Its programs, displays, and collections, including those that highlight and celebrate diversity such as Transgender Day of Visibility and the inclusion of LGBTQ+ books and resources, are entirely consistent with both the law and the values of equality and liberty upon which our community and nation are founded.
Public libraries are funded and supported by all taxpayers. Therefore, they must serve all people—without discrimination or censorship. The library’s inclusive programming ensures that every resident of Zionsville and Whitestown, regardless of age, race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, or background, can find representation, belonging, and safety within its walls.
We are deeply concerned by efforts to undermine, restrict, or intimidate the library in fulfilling this mission. Attempts to silence or erase these efforts do not reflect the morals of a free and democratic society—they threaten them. They are nothing less than hate. Therefore, we respectfully demand that:
- The Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library be allowed to continue its inclusive programming and displays without censorship or political interference.
- The Library Board and Town Council publicly affirm the library’s right and responsibility to serve all community members equally. Our community leaders stand firmly against harassment, discrimination, or threats directed toward library staff or patrons.
- Zionsville and Whitestown thrive when everyone feels safe, welcome, and valued.
The Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library embodies that spirit, and it deserves our unwavering support. Let us stand together for inclusion, understanding, and the freedom to learn.
