The issue

We, the undersigned members of the Indian community in Queensland, and supporters of the Australia India House project, hereby submit this petition to express our full support for the Federation of Indian Communities of Queensland (FICQ) as the peak body. FICQ comprises over 60 Indian organisational members representing 100,000 people of Indian ancestry. We believe FICQ should take the lead and become the proponent of this significant initiative.

The proposed Australia India House project, originally developed by peak body FICQ and supported by member organisations and the wider Indian community in Queensland, holds immense promise for fostering cultural exchange, community cohesion, and social engagement. Springfield Land Corporation's generous donation of land and the Federal Government's allocation of $3.5 million as an election commitment for the Blair federal seat underscore the significance and viability of this endeavour.

We are heartened by the pledges of support from various Indian communities and the ongoing efforts to raise funds, with a target of $1.5 million from members and donors. Furthermore, our submission to the Queensland state government for $1.5 million reflects our commitment to securing the necessary resources for the successful realization of the Australia India House project.

Additionally, we are actively engaging Indian businesses operating in Australia, seeking their support for this endeavour, recognising the mutual benefits it offers in terms of cultural enrichment, community outreach, and business networking opportunities.

The proposed facilities, including a large community hall accommodating approximately 700-800 people, alongside small and medium-sized meeting rooms equipped with essential amenities, and a community kitchen, and home for all of the wider community organisations in Queensland represent a vital infrastructure investment that aligns with the diverse needs and aspirations of our growing community.

We request all stakeholders, governmental bodies, and community members to rally behind FICQ's leadership in advancing the Australia India House project. With concerted efforts and collective support, we aim to commence the project in late 2024 and realise its transformative potential for the Indian community in Queensland and beyond.

Signed,
