Petition in support of completing the Hermanus Cliff Path

The Issue

This is a petition in support of constructing the last section of the iconic Hermanus Cliff Path in Poole’s Bay as proposed by the Cliff Path Action Group (CPAG).

The Friends of the Hermanus Action Group and all other interested parties wish to record their - support for the process initiated and facilitated by the Cliff Path Action Group (CPAG) on behalf of the people of Hermanus. Our love for this town is deeply rooted, and we believe in preserving its natural beauty for future generations. One such treasure is the Hermanus cliff path, a scenic walkway that offers breath taking views of our coastline.

The cliff path project was initiated seven years ago by a group of Hermanus volunteers who came together as the Cliff Path Action Group (CPAG) to provide public access to one of South Africa's most stunning coastlines.  It has been supported by the authorities and numerous residents who understand its value both as a tourist attraction and as an important part of our local heritage.

The Cliff Path project aims to connect the two parts of the iconic cliff path thereby avoiding the detour on the narrow sidewalk of the busiest road in town. The vision is a path similar in character to the rest of the cliff path. This community-driven and -funded project will result in an infrastructure upgrade of arguably the town’s biggest tourist asset. The project supports the principles of eco-tourism, as well as coastal public access. The pathway would be constructed in accordance with an Environmental Management Plan, limiting any potential impact on the coastal and marine environment.

An Environmental Authorisation (EA) for the pathway was granted in November 2022 and remains valid. The appeals lodged by the Poole’s Bay Residents Association (PBRA) were dismissed in April 2023 by Minister Anton Bredell, Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Western Cape.

Now an interdict has been lodged by Poole's Bay Residents Association to stop the construction of the pathway which began recently.
It is profoundly disheartening to see that the completion of this path is being repeatedly challenged legally by some owners of the adjacent erven. This not only hampers progress but also comes at a significant cost to our community.

The Cliff Path Action Group needs your support now more than ever. By signing this petition, you are voicing your support for the completion of the Hermanus cliff path and opposing unnecessary legal challenges that hinder its progress. Let us stand together for our community's right to enjoy our natural heritage.

Please note that the contribution requested by Change.org does not go to CPAG.

Please just rather select  "share" instead of feeling obliged to make a contribution to change.org, unless you, of course, wish to do so.
