Petition for Urgent Coyote Population Control on Boblo Island
The Issue
Petition to the Town of Amherstburg, Ontario
Date: August 21, 2024
To: Mayor Michael Prue and the Town Council of Amherstburg
Address: 271 Sandwich Street South, Amherstburg, ON, N9V 2A5
Cc: Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, Ontario
Subject: Urgent Request for Coyote Population Control on Bois Blanc Island (Boblo Island)
Dear Mayor Prue and the Members of the Amherstburg Town Council,
We, the undersigned residents of Bois Blanc Island (Boblo Island), write to express our deep concern and urgent need for immediate action regarding the escalating coyote problem on our island. Over the past several months, there have been dozens of sightings and numerous complaints from residents, most notably discussed and shared within the Boblo Island Social Group on Facebook. These reports have included unsettling incidents, culminating in the tragic mauling and death of a family pet dog.
The presence of coyotes on the island has reached an alarming level, posing a significant threat not only to our pets but also to the safety and well-being of our community members. Despite the island’s designation as a 'private' entity, it is important to note that residents contribute taxes to the municipality of Amherstburg and, therefore, expect the same level of protection and services as other areas within the town’s jurisdiction.
We respectfully request that the Town of Amherstburg work in conjunction with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry to implement a culling of the coyote population on Bois Blanc Island, as provided for under the Wildlife Control for Municipalities legislation. This action is necessary to restore safety and peace of mind to our community, which has been significantly impacted by the increasing and unchecked coyote presence.
The safety and security of our residents, their families, and pets are paramount. We urge the Town of Amherstburg to take immediate and decisive action to address this issue, as inaction will only lead to further incidents and potentially more tragic outcomes.
Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. We trust that the Town Council will act in the best interests of its constituents by addressing this urgent issue with the seriousness it demands.
Sincerely,
Michelle Pflug
