Thank you to Hinckley Township Trustee Monique Ascherl for reaching out and sharing important context about this issue. Trustee Ascherl confirmed that while the intersection of Weymouth Rd. and Stony Hill Rd. lies within Hinckley Township, the decision-making authority belongs to ODOT, not to the Township or Medina County Commissioners.
She also noted that Hinckley Township and local officials have already contacted ODOT several times requesting the addition of “Cross Traffic Does Not Stop” signs, but those requests were denied following two previous ODOT traffic studies over the past decade. Despite these efforts, she agrees the intersection remains hazardous and supports renewed action to prompt a third traffic study or additional safety measures.
I want to thank Trustee Ascherl for her openness and for being willing to help however she can.
Monique — please feel free to share your insights directly in the comments section of this Change.org petition so that residents and supporters can hear directly from you and better understand the current constraints and next steps.
To those following this petition: it appears that changing Hinckley’s form of government (e.g., to a city or charter township) would not, by itself, shift authority over this intersection — since ODOT retains jurisdiction over state and U.S. routes regardless of local government structure. However, stronger local advocacy and unified requests from township leadership, the county, and residents can still make a difference in pushing ODOT to act.
Let’s keep the momentum going — please continue sharing the petition and adding your comments about near-misses or safety concerns at this intersection. The more data we collect, the harder it becomes for ODOT to ignore.
