Petition for the protection of Black Pearl Skatepark against overdevelopment

The Issue

"The Black Pearl is the largest Outdoor concrete park in the western hemisphere and second largest in the world!!
The park encompasses 62000 sqft of vert, street and flower course for beginner, intermediate and advanced skaters." - Black Pearl Skatepark Website.

As from their website, The Black Pearl Skatepark serves to "provide a safe haven for the Youth of Cayman Islands". It is an uncommon and valuable community space that Cayman should be very proud of. The park has held many large competitions and events with lots of big names such as Shaun White, Tony Hawk, Bam Margera, teams of professional skateboarders from Independent and Thrasher, and more recently a Meals On Wheels fundraiser in 2021.

There is word that the park is to be sold to a private company. This petition acts to request that the Skatepark remains intact and unharmed by development. The new landowners can take positive action to revitalise the park and give back to the community. All the park needs is publicity and more of an international outreach. Black Pearl is globally renowned as one of the biggest parks in the West and the largest in the Caribbean.

Private companies will of course look to be making a return on investments and it is currently paid entry to the park. The park has held skate camps in the past, run by staff and professionals for kids to learn and advance which were well received by parents on island.

In an ideal world the park might be owned by government and looked after as a state-owned community park. However, the Skatepark can still be well maintained by the new buyers if it is in their interests to serve the community. The venture has full potential to revitalise the space and attract a healthy and welcoming community.

Do get in touch with your local news service if they would make an article or have any information on the future of the park. Realising the community value of the Black Pearl above its monetary value is of utmost importance for its preservation.

To be absolutely clear, this petition is peaceful and looking to cooperate with developers for mutual gain, that the park is preserved and developers do well out of the venture.

Regulation on development in Cayman is a hot topic and civil negotiations need to occur between all stakeholders for the future prospects of Black Pearl Skatepark. For an accurate reflection of opinions by stakeholders, these discussions could be held by the developers and have attending representatives of the local strata, government planning civil servants, and people who use the park regularly.

The goal of this is petition is that while the park is put under new management, it is not subject to damage by development but maintained and well kept for the national treasure it is. If it turns out that the park is to be flattened for further development of residential complexes, the Cayman Islands will have lost a vital part of culture and heritage. In these times where overdevelopment is rife in Cayman, the best thing to happen for the park is that it is looked after properly by stakeholders who have a genuine interest in the wellbeing of Caymanian communities.
