What's UP.
We still skate - pic is from Cartago.
Below is my email I've sent to various MPs and representatives... YOU can get in touch with YOUR MPs and representatives AS WELL!
Let's not admit defeat.
"Good afternoon,
I hope this email finds you well.
I am writing to you to inquire about developments concerning Cayman's Black Pearl Skatepark, in Grand Harbor.
I have heard of the park's closure and would like to ask the new government and representatives what they would do about it.
I ran a campaign, featured in articles and began a petition with now about 6000 signatures. Petition link: https://chng.it/LnMwB6cn7x
Particularly, proposing the government would purchase the Skatepark, maintain it, hire staff, and generate income by charging people to skate and use the park as it used to - a real investment in Caymans community and youth. The news of the park's closure is sad for many, and many would like the park to reopen. It is such a positive safe space for children and people of a range of ages. It is one of the only spaces where you're allowed to skate on island. The park keeps people active, engaged in healthy activity, and at-risk youth away from harm. Skating is a real home for people. Community. One of the few community spaces left.
“It’s a very sad thing that this park is going. I just wish that people saw what this park is. It’s a fantastic tool that kids can work on. They can lose weight, which is one of the problems here in Cayman at the moment because no kids are going outside,” (Cayman Compass, 2024)
As Cayman Islands Government Officials, Staff, Members of Parliament, and as people of Cayman, I would highly appreciate your thoughts, any latest developments such as planning, and the transparency of any plans for action.
I would be glad to have an online meeting to discuss matters of the park - I have my own ideas of a plan and the backing of the community.
Kind regards.
Sincerely,
Rufus Davies"
