Petition for the Office of the President to Create an Organization for Multimedia Artists

The Issue

Nowadays, Filipino Visual Artists have grown in population, especially with the various technological advancements. Aside from traditional visual artists who create paintings, drawings, and sculptures, as well as other forms of visual arts, digital art like digital drawing or painting, multimedia art, and graphic design are also art forms that exist in the modern era. For this reason, we started a Petition for the Office of the President to Create a Government Organization to Aid Filipino Multimedia Artists.

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) is one government organization whose goal is to safeguard, develop, and promote Filipino culture, however, it is not directed specifically to support visual artists. Even support in terms of education is lacking, for example, only a handful of schools offer the Arts and Design Track, and a lot of Filipino Artists migrate abroad to pursue an art career due to the lack of opportunities in the Philippines.

The NCCA can help visual artists by providing a venue for showcasing art. However, other issues of Filipino Visual Artists need to be addressed such as the professionalization and promotion of ethics in the Philippine art scene, international recognition, patronage and support for media other than painting, funding for international competitions, and financial support to subsidizing production costs for small art businesses.

Creating an organization to aid Filipino visual artists is beneficial for several reasons.

  • Firstly, it would provide much-needed support and resources for artists who often face financial and systemic challenges.
  •  Secondly, it would help promote and showcase Filipino art locally and globally, contributing to the cultural and artistic landscape.
  •  Lastly, it can promote and support their diverse talent, address challenges like limited exhibitions and foster cultural expression, preserve artistic heritage, boost the economy, and contribute to the overall appreciation of Filipino society's arts.

The lack of good organizations accessible to Filipino visual and media artists will lead to the eventual downfall of the creative industry in the Philippines, especially now that the quick and continuous advancement of technology puts media–specialized artists in demand. To elaborate, here are the concerning consequences:

Skill and Development Training. An artist’s goal is to improve their skills and ultimately be recognized in the art industry, which is not possible for Filipino artists as there are limited resources that their country can offer, especially in visual and media arts. The lack of skill and experience will hinder them from establishing a career and making connections.

Diminished Artistic Diversity. The lack of opportunities for artists in the Philippines will demoralize Filipinos from pursuing arts. The stereotyped notion, “wala namang pera sa arts,” will never be corrected and artists cannot prove this idea wrong if they are discouraged. Each artist has unique, innovative ideas and expressions; they must be encouraged to build artistic diversity in the country.

Brain Drain. Eventually, all of the consequences above may lead to brain drain.  Talented and skilled Filipino artists will seek opportunities abroad to achieve their artistic endeavors where the visual and media arts industry is promising. The Philippines cannot thrive nor make a breakthrough in the creative industry if its visual and media artists are not well-supported.
