The Issue

The Neolithic archaeological site of Burzahom stands among the most significant prehistoric heritage sites in the Indian subcontinent and occupies a prominent place in the archaeological and cultural history of Kashmir. Situated on the eastern side of Srinagar near the foothills of the Zabarwan Range, Burzahom represents the earliest settled human occupation in the Kashmir Valley and provides invaluable evidence regarding the cultural, technological, Environmental, economic, and social development of prehistoric communities in the Himalayan region. It was first identified through trial work by H. de Terra and T.T. Paterson in 1935, later on extensively excavated by the Archaeological Survey of India between 1960 and 1971 by T.N. Khazanchi. In recognition of its outstanding prehistoric importance, “The Neolithic Settlement of Burzahom” was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative listing in 2014.

Despite its archaeological and cultural significance, the site has not yet received final recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Furthermore, Burzahom continues to face serious threats including environmental deterioration, urban pressure, encroachments, inadequate conservation measures, and insufficient public awareness. Since archaeological heritage is non-renewable in nature, any damage to the site would result in the permanent loss of invaluable prehistoric knowledge of Kashmir.

In this context, the establishment of a dedicated Site Museum at Burzahom has become an urgent necessity. Such a museum would preserve, conserve, and display the excavated artefacts and archaeological records associated with the site while functioning as an educational and research center for the prehistoric heritage of Kashmir. A Site Museum would allow visitors, students, and researchers to understand the archaeological material within its original geographical and cultural context, thereby creating a stronger connection between archaeology and society.

Importantly, the artefacts excavated from Burzahom Archaeological Site is currently gathering dust in various storerooms/repositories across the country, particularly those under the custody of the Archaeological Survey of India, should be brought back and displayed in the proposed Site Museum at Burzahom.

We urge you to support this important cause by signing this petition for the establishment of a Site Museum at Burzahom Archaeological Site. Together, we can help preserve and protect one of the earliest prehistoric settlements of Kashmir Himalayas, safeguard its invaluable archaeological heritage, and ensure that the legacy of Burzahom survives for future generations as a symbol of Kashmir’s rich cultural past.
