Petition for Stricter Regulations on Harmful Food Additives

The Issue

To the Honorable Members of Congress and Regulatory Authorities:

We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about the current state of the food industry and its impact on public health. The prevalence of toxic chemicals, preservatives, dyes, and potentially cancer-causing additives in our food supply is alarming. An industry that should prioritize nourishment is instead driven by profits, often at the expense of consumer well-being. This paradigm does a grave disservice to the health of U.S. citizens, who are not only consumers but also taxpayers funding government functions.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one-third (36.5%) of U.S. adults have obesity, a condition correlated with the consumption of unhealthy foods. Additionally, Consumer Reports found that some food additives are linked to health risks such as heart disease, cancer, and allergies.

Recent studies have shown that ultra-processed foods (UPFs), which often contain these harmful additives, are associated with a higher risk of chronic diseases. Evidence links UPF consumption to increased risks of premature death, cardiovascular disease, mental health disorders, diabetes, obesity, and sleep problems. The Pew Research Center found that a significant portion of the American public is concerned about the health risks posed by food additives, with many believing that these additives contribute to serious health issues over a lifetime.

The financial impact of chronic diseases is staggering. According to the CDC, 90% of the $4.1 trillion in U.S. healthcare costs can be attributed to chronic or mental health conditions. Chronic diseases account for 81% of all hospital admissions, 91% of all prescriptions filled, and 76% of all doctor visits. Reducing the prevalence of these diseases through better food regulations could significantly lower healthcare costs and improve the quality of life for millions of Americans.

Moreover, the cost of health insurance is heavily impacted by the prevalence of chronic diseases. Since 2000, health insurance premiums for employer-sponsored family coverage have increased by 87%. Healthcare costs for people with chronic conditions average $6,032 annually—five times higher than those without such conditions. By reducing the incidence of chronic diseases, we can expect a decrease in health insurance costs, making healthcare more affordable for everyone.

Improving public health through better food regulations also has economic benefits. Healthier individuals are more productive and have fewer absences from work. Studies have shown that good mental and physical health positively impacts job performance and worker availability. This, in turn, boosts the economy by increasing productivity and reducing the financial burden on businesses due to health-related absences.

We are calling for comprehensive regulations and a ban on harmful additives, not merely an outlet for companies to rename their additives. Many of these additives derive from alarming sources such as bugs, chemicals, and other synthetic substances. For instance, carmine, a red dye, is derived from crushed cochineal insects. Sodium nitrite, used in processed meats, is linked to an increased risk of cancer. Artificial sweeteners like aspartame and saccharin have been associated with various health issues. These are just a few examples of the many additives that can pose serious health risks.

It’s high time we shift the focus of our food industry back to health, away from harmful substances. We demand that our government enforce stricter regulations on the use of toxic chemicals, preservatives, and unhealthy ingredients in our food for the health of our populace. Sign this petition now to bring about this crucial change for the well-being of our citizens.
