The Issue

The recent election process for the Principal Chief of the United Houma Nation has been marred by significant irregularities. As tribal citizens and voting members, we deserve a fair and honest election process. Unfortunately, this has not been the case.

Election rules and filing deadlines appear to have been applied inconsistently, as a candidate who allegedly failed to meet the application deadline was allowed to continue as a candidate. The Election Board failed to adhere to the guidelines, leaving many tribal citizens and voting members uninformed about voting registration and deadlines. We were also plagued by delays in receiving absentee ballots and information on polling locations, which hindered our ability to exercise our voting rights.

Moreover, there have been instances of ballot boxes being tampered with, raising questions about the integrity of the voting process. It has also come to light that a tribal office employee actively campaigned for the re-election of the current Principal Chief, leading to a conflict of interest.

Adding to these issues, the Election Board has not adhered to the ordinances that ensure a fair election. They have not permitted each candidate to have poll watchers inside poll locations, a practice that is vital for maintaining transparency and fairness.

These profound failures have compromised the election's legitimacy. It is crucial for the integrity of our tribal governance and for the trust of our community that these issues are addressed. Therefore, we call for the immediate cancellation of the current election of the Principal Chief of the United Houma Nation and demand that a new Election Board re-conduct the election in strict adherence to our established ordinances.

Stand up, citizens of the United Houma Nation, in demanding justice and fair representation. Sign this petition to ensure a transparent and honest election for the leadership of the United Houma Nation. Our voices must be heard, and our votes must count.
