Petition updatePetition for ResignationAs America Celebrates Your Right To Know, Mayor Martin Doesn't Think You Have One

It's not a week that will  appear on any calendar, but it is the time of the year when government and media recognize the importance of our American freedom of information. In short, we all have a right to know what our  government and its leaders are doing.

This is National Sunshine Week, which celebrates openness in government, a movement that started after Watergate. It was a scandal many described as a first-rate cover-up of a third-rate break-in of  the Watergate Hotel. It led to the first and still only resignation of a sitting president.

In Logansport, Mayor Chris Martin doesn't share the importance of that national sentiment. He refuses to release e-mails involving his handling of the Iron horsemen basketball team and its $40,000-plus bill left at the Super 8 Motel. Last year, a public records request was filed with the clerk-treasurer's office and City Attorney Kelly Leeman responded that because of pending litigation, the e-mails would not be released. This came before court dates were set that sought to garnishee Martin's city wagtes for unpaid bills.

If Martin has nothing to hide, he shouldn't be hiding it. There is no litigation filed against him or the city involving the  Super 8 Motel. Yet it appears Martin wants to stall out his term until he leaves office rather than resign as nearly 1,000 voters have signed a petition to support.

If you believe Martin and the city should be transparent about what has been negotiated, promised and committed, then join us in signing and sharing our petition. It already has more signatures than the number of voters who supported him in 2023.

For the future of our community and the betterment of our current reputation, please sign today.
