The boilerplate industry that spawned the Cass/Logansport Industrial Park is closing next month.
Carter Fuel, formerly Federal-Mogul and Switches, Inc., a Logansport bred business, is ending its operations. Meanwhile, there is no sign from Logansport Mayor Chris Martin on how or if he will help employees who are losing their jobs.
Former Mayor Dave Kitchell said he is saddened by the closing.
"I was proud to be endorsed by the United Steel Workers Union members who worked at the plant in 2015, and I made a point when I was Mayor to keep abreast of the situation and meet with plant officials. Cass County is tied for the fifth highest unemployment rate in Indiana, and this is not going to help our ranking or our local economy."
Kitchell reiterated his call last year for Martin to resign and for the city council to replace him with a professionally-trained, independent city manager.
"We've lost downtown restaurants and other employers and we've had to give away Logansport Memorial Hospital, with no support from the mayor. It's clear he doesn't understand economic development, and this is priority one for the person who leads this city."
Meanwhile the petition drive for the resignation is nearing the 1,000-signature mark and should equal the number of voters who supported Martin when he won less than 50 percent of the vote in the 2023 election.
