Logansport taxpayers may have to shell out $300,000 to a former fire-fighter whose domestic violence case, according to information disclosed at the Logansport City Council meeting Monday.
Councilman B.J. Cox, who for years served as a firefighter with the Logansport department, asked during the council comment section of the meeting about the case involving firefighter Scott Jones who has since retired. Jones, per the city handbook, was suspended during the previous administration after he faced felony charges. But in Martin's administration, the case eventually led to lesser charges when it concluded in 2023. Because Jones was suspended in 2018 at first with pay but for the bulk of the time between the pont he left the department without pay and his trial, he is owed back wages.
It was not immediately clear if all or part of the money Jones will receive is from the Public Employees Retirement Fund or city coffers. According to the 2023 Pharos-Tribune story about Jones' trial and status with the department, "Jones also expressed frustration during the hearing with the (Logansport Board of Public Works') response time to his case, saying the board needed to 'finish the business.'" Martin, who is frequently absent from his office, chairs the board.
Incidents such as these are among many that have led to this petition demanding Martin's resignation and his replacement with a non-partisan, trained city manager who is appointed by the city council.
