More than 350 verified Logansport residents have now signed a petition demanding that their mayor resign.
This comes at a time when there is uncertainty how the stepped up ICE staffing and enforcement will have an impact on Logansport's No. 1 industry, Tyson Foods. Last year, Mayor Chris Martin said he needed state help to deal with the influx of immigration -- primarily Haitian -- but then Gov. Eric Holcomb said he didn't need help. Now, Gov. Mike Braun offered no hint of what he will do -- if anything -- due to Martin's plea, when Braun was in Logansport last week. With Tyson relying heavily on immigrant workers and Logansport depending on its No. 1 property taxpayer and Logansport Utilities customer in Tyson, Martin and Braun are walking a fine line that could not only impact Tyson but the city.
Concerned local residents can sign and share this petition to send a clear message to Martin and the city council, which is empowered to appoint a city manager thanks to a change in state law in the 1990s. Logansport's economy is heavily reliant on the impact of Tyson in the retail and service sectors. We ask you to join your neighbors, friends, co-workers and fellow taxpayers in signing and sharing this petition. Thank you for caring for the future of our city.
