The current unresolved dispute over nearly $50,000 in payment owed the Super 8 Motel in Logansport raises questions about the professional ethics of Logansport's mayor.
Chris Martin has a stated interest of pursuing a career in sports management after his time in the City Building is completed. Prior to serving he was attempting to run an amateur sports league called Back Yard Sports. While in office, he has used $50,000 in discretnoary funding to promote the Iron Horses, a minor league professional basketball team, which could potentially lead him into a career with the franchise -- if it remains in Logansport. But an attorney for the Super 8 Motel is seeking payment from the city for another nearly $50,000 in overdue payment for player rooms at the motel. According to the Pharos-Tribune, Martin negotiated an agreement with Super 8. The city's deputy mayor says the bill should be paid to the league, which reportedly had not responded.
It's unclear where the money will come from to pay the bill, but the attorney who appeared at a city council meeting indicasted the matter may be headed for court. Martin did not attend the last city council meeting June 23rd.
This comes a year after the city council had a meeting to discuss the mayor's conduct and frequent absences from the City Building. Since then, little has changed. Martin is frequently gone.
To move Logansport forward at a time when downtown restaurants and stores have closed, Memorial Hospital has been given away to Fort Wayne Parkview and population is declining in Cass County, we humbly ask that you sign and share our petition.
Thank you for caring for our community in this Independence Day week.
