Petition for Resident-Only Parking & One-Way Traffic System

The Issue

Residents between Beresford and Hamilton road are facing persistent parking issues, traffic congestion, and increased littering due to non-residents occupying our limited parking spaces and the rising footfall from two expanding local mosques. Many of us struggle to find a parking space near our homes, often forcing us to park far away in unsafer areas. This issue is more than just an inconvenience, it directly impacts our daily lives, security, damage to our properties and to park safely near our homes.

As a result of hit and runs on resident cars recently and over the last few years, individuals residents insurance premiums have increased at no fault of their own.

Despite efforts by the mosques to remind visitors to be mindful of residents, the situation has not improved. As residents we respect and understand the importance of the local mosques as holy places of worship and however the same cannot be said by visitors to the area who are not considerate of the mosques surrounding areas as they should be.

During daily peak times and when events are on at the mosques and the local parks, Birchfields, Plattfields and Rushford park every year, particularly during Ramadan, we experience:

• Severe parking shortages, with non-residents taking up spaces meant for those who live here

• Damage to parked vehicles due to overcrowding and poor driver awareness

• Traffic congestion and road rage incidents, as cars refuse to give way on narrow streets

• Increased littering and fly-tipping, as the rising footfall has led to a surge in waste being left on our streets

What We Are Calling for:

1. Resident-Only Parking Permits

• Ensures that residents have priority access to parking near their homes

• Stops non-residents from occupying spaces meant for those who live here

• Improves safety by reducing the need to park far from home

• Creates a fair and organised parking system

2. A One-Way Traffic System (for all streets between Hamilton Road and Beresford Road)

• Improves traffic flow and significantly reduces congestion

• Minimises vehicle damage by eliminating two-way bottlenecks on narrow roads

• Reduces road rage and driver conflicts

• Enhances safety for both residents and pedestrians

3. Better Litter & Fly-Tipping Prevention Measures

  • Increased waste collection services, especially during high-footfall periods i.e weekends
  • Regular volunteer led community clean up in the area.

We are calling on Manchester City Council to take urgent action on these issues to ensure safer, cleaner, and more accessible streets for residents.

By signing this petition, you are supporting a solution that will protect our right to fair parking, improve traffic flow, and create a cleaner community.

The more local residents who sign, the stronger our case will be, let’s work together to make our streets safer for all.
