Subject: Urgent intervention required to address contaminated drinking water supply and failing sewage infrastructure in Sreshtha Vihar, Delhi – 110092
Respected Sir/Madam,
We, the undersigned residents of Sreshtha Vihar, Delhi – 110092, through this petition, wish to draw your immediate attention to a matter of serious public health concern affecting our colony.
The underground sewage and water pipeline infrastructure in Sreshtha Vihar was originally laid over 45 years ago. Over time, the sewage pipelines have significantly deteriorated and are now broken and leaking at multiple locations due to age, wear and tear, and lack of adequate maintenance.
Although the drinking water pipelines were replaced in recent years, these too have been repeatedly damaged due to unregulated and frequent construction and reconstruction activities within the colony. As a result, there are multiple instances where sewage water seeps into the drinking water pipelines. Contaminated water is being supplied to households, posing a severe risk of water-borne diseases and endangering the health and safety of residents, including children and senior citizens.
Despite repeated complaints, the issue persists and is worsening, indicating the need for systemic and long-term solutions rather than temporary fixes.
In light of the above, we collectively demand the following urgent actions:
1. Complete replacement of the existing sewage pipeline network across Sreshtha Vihar to eliminate leakages and prevent contamination.
2. Thorough inspection and replacement/repair of the drinking water pipeline system to ensure safe and uninterrupted supply of potable water.
3. Implementation of strict regulatory controls on construction activities, including:
o Mandatory permissions and supervision for any work involving pipeline areas,
o Prohibition and penalisation of unauthorized puncturing or damage to pipelines,
o Accountability mechanisms for contractors and property owners.
4. Establishment of a robust monitoring and grievance redressal system with defined timelines for resolution.
5. Long-term infrastructure planning for at least the next 50–100 years to ensure sustainable and world-class civic utilities.
6. Consideration of structural reforms in water supply management, including public-private partnership or privatisation models, to improve efficiency, accountability, and service delivery.
Delhi, as the capital of India, must uphold the highest standards of civic infrastructure. Access to clean and safe drinking water is a fundamental right, and its continued compromise is unacceptable.
We urge the authorities to treat this matter with utmost urgency and initiate immediate as well as long-term corrective measures.
We, the residents, stand united in this petition and request prompt action.
