Petition for Recycling Bins in Every TCU Classroom and Academic Hallway

Across TCU, many students and faculty members have asked the question - why does TCU have so few recycling bins? In a survey of 102 students and faculty conducted by the student organization MOVE TCU last semester, 72% viewed recycling as the most important factor of TCU’s sustainability efforts. Furthermore, there is a stark contrast in the number of recycling bins on TCU’s campus compared to peer institutions (SMU cannot have more recycling bins than us!).
This petition addresses these concerns by calling for clearly labelled recycling bins in every academic hallway and classroom on campus. Each can should be labeled with Fort Worth’s recycling criteria. This petition, led by MOVE TCU, aims to reduce waste on campus and educate Horned Frogs about becoming responsible global citizens.
Foremost, recycling and composting of municipal solid waste saved over 193 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2018 (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency website, September 2025). College students play a significant role by producing an average of 640lbs of solid waste every year, 80% which is believed to be recyclable (Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection website). By making recycling more accessible on campus, we will mitigate waste, decrease TCU’s carbon footprint, and do our part in reducing the ramifications of climate change.
Subsequently, TCU’s mission statement is to “educate individuals and act as ethical leaders and responsible citizens in the global community,” therefore it’s critical to educate our student body about easy ways to stifle environmental damage. This recycling petition brings students' desires to act globally responsible into fruition. By taking simple steps to increase recycling accessibility on campus, we showcase that being globally responsible is as easy as recycling old assignments, Celsius cans, and Shake Smart cups after class.
