Petition for Permanent Ban on ALL AI data centers on Long Island

The Issue

The town of Brookhaven stated at the town meeting (5/28) that they will enact an 18th month moratorium. This is not enough! We need a full ban for all of Long Island!

NOTE: The environmental conservation committee has a proposed bill to create a 3 year moratorium on all AI data centers in NY. This is so they can research and collect data on the negative impact these centers have on communities. Please call your state senator this week and tell them WE ARE in support of this bill and we say NO to AI data centers.

We pay enough to live on Long Island. We deserve clean water for our families and future generations. The proposal to build two AI data centers in Yaphank and at the Brookhaven National Lab is a direct threat to our community's wellbeing. This development would not only put a strain on our precious natural resources but also burden our already expensive cost of living.

Below are just a few issues other communities across the country have reported after allowing data centers to be built in their hometown:

1.      The cooling systems for these massive facilities can cause a constant 24-hour hum, often over 80 decibels (comparable to the sound of a garbage disposal).  Nearby residents complain of an inability to sleep.  Large backup diesel generators also add to the noise and environmental pollution.

2.      The cost of the utility grid upgrades necessary for hyperscale data centers are often passed on to the local residents.  A 300 MW draw is massive.  Upgrades will be required.

3.      To cool their vast computer servers,  300 MW  hyperscale data centers consume anywhere from 1 million to over 5 million gallons of water daily.  Water pollution, limited natural resources and the impact during droughts are concerns.

4.      Residential property values are reduced when massive and noisy million square foot hyperscale data centers are constructed nearby.

Other municipalities in New York currently have moratoriums preventing data center permitting while they evaluate community impacts and propose changes to their zoning and town codes.

By signing this petition, we are asking the Town of Brookhaven to institute a moratorium against constructing data centers in our town.    The moratorium would allow time for our town officials to change ordinances and zoning laws to prevent irreversible harm to our beloved  community.

If you live, work, or care about Brookhaven or Long Island in general, add your name to this petition and protect our environment, housing values, keep utilities affordable, and maintain our small-town quality of life.
