As a teacher, a parent, and someone who has worked with neurodivergent children for years, I have seen first-hand the unique challenges they face in daily life. One of the greatest barriers is the lack of inclusive environments that cater to their needs. Neurodivergent children, including those on the Autism spectrum, often require specific sensory inputs to remain calm and comfortable in social environments. Unfortunately, in our community, facilities like shopping centres and Soft Play areas (particularly in the Northside of Cork City and city suburbs) are ill-equipped to provide these essential resources.

Sensory rooms offer a safe haven for neurodivergent children, allowing them to socialize and engage in everyday activities with greater ease and comfort. These rooms are designed to help manage overstimulation by providing calming, sensory-friendly environments. When incorporated into public spaces like shopping centres and soft play facilities, they transform these venues into more inclusive and welcoming places for all children.

While some areas are beginning to recognize the importance of sensory rooms, our community is lagging behind. This discrepancy not only affects the social lives of neurodivergent children but also their developmental opportunities. They, too, deserve to enjoy birthday parties, shopping trips, and outings with friends and family. It's a simple yet profound addition that can vastly improve their quality of life and foster a more inclusive society.

By incorporating sensory rooms into more public areas, we can make a significant impact on these children's lives. We urge local councils and facility managers to allocate funding and space for these essential rooms. Through collaboration with occupational therapists and designers specializing in sensory environments, we can create spaces that are both functional and supportive.
