Petition for More Dedicated Pickleball Courts with Lighting in Irvine Great Park

The Issue

Introduction:

We, the undersigned, are calling upon the authorities responsible for the development and management of Great Park to address the urgent need for more dedicated pickleball courts with lighting. The phenomenal growth and popularity of pickleball across the nation cannot be ignored. With 185 pickleball court petitions nationwide and an estimated 36.5 million pickleball players in the United States, it is evident that pickleball has become a beloved sport in our communities. As passionate pickleball enthusiasts, we kindly request your support in expanding the pickleball infrastructure in Great Park to accommodate the growing demand and promote a healthier, more active, and inclusive community.

Petition Statement:

Pickleball has experienced remarkable growth, with participation rates increasing by an average of 158.6% over the last three years, according to the SFIA. It has become the fastest-growing sport in America for the past three years, capturing the attention and passion of people of all ages and skill levels. The pickleball paddle market size reached an estimated $152.8 million in 2021, with a projected annual growth rate of 7.7% through 2028. These figures demonstrate the immense popularity and long-term potential of pickleball as a sport.

Current Challenges:

  1. Insufficient Dedicated Pickleball Courts: The existing 11 pickleball courts in Irvine are hybrid tennis and pickleball courts, lacking adequate pickleball net infrastructure. This limits the availability and accessibility of dedicated pickleball courts for players in the area.
  2. Limited Playing Opportunities and Crowded Courts: The Portola Springs Community Park currently has only six dedicated pickleball courts. However, these courts are often overcrowded, especially during peak times. As a result, players face long wait times of up to 20 to 30 minutes to play a game, inhibiting their ability to enjoy the sport to its fullest.
  3. Adverse Weather Conditions and Scheduling Conflicts: The existing pickleball courts are subject to rain conditions, rendering them unusable during inclement weather. Furthermore, scheduled classes and leagues on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights further reduce the available playing time for pickleball enthusiasts.
  4. Financial Focus over Player Needs: Instead of addressing the shortage of courts, the city has implemented a pay-to-reserve system for two courts, prioritizing financial gain over the needs of the pickleball community. This approach exacerbates the challenges faced by players, making it even more difficult to access and enjoy the sport.

Petition Goals:

We respectfully request that the authorities take the following actions to address the pickleball infrastructure shortage in Irvine:

  1. Utilize the expansive space in Great Park to construct an additional 12 dedicated pickleball courts, designed specifically to meet the needs of pickleball players. Great Park today has 24 soccer fields and they are not nearly used to full at all. One soccer field can be converted to more than 30 pickleball courts easily. It is only the matter of change!
  2. Installation of Lighting and Shade Structures: Equip the new pickleball courts with proper lighting and shade structures, enabling extended playing hours and ensuring a comfortable experience for players.
  3. Regular Maintenance and Safety Standards: Maintain the courts to the highest safety standards, implementing regular inspections and upkeep to provide a safe and enjoyable playing environment for all participants.

    Conclusion:

By signing this petition, we express our strong support for the construction of more dedicated pickleball courts with lighting in Irvine, preferably Great Park. We believe that these additions will alleviate the current shortage, reduce wait times, and create an inclusive space for pickleball enthusiasts in Irvine. We kindly urge the authorities to prioritize the expansion of pickleball facilities, demonstrating a commitment to the well-being and recreational needs of the community. Together, let us create a thriving pickleball community in Irvine that promotes physical activity, inclusivity, and social engagement.
