Petition for Legal Protections for Companion Animals: A Call to Action in Memory of Sage Nymeria

We, the undersigned, are asking for changes to laws that protect domesticated companion animals, to ensure that no family has to endure the heartbreak of losing a beloved pet to unnecessary violence. This petition is not just about the law—it’s about protecting the innocent lives of animals who bring love and light into our lives.

The Tragic Loss of Sage Nymeria
Sage Nymeria was my soul dog. She wasn’t just a pet—she was my protector, my constant companion, and my source of strength through some of the hardest times of my life. Sage brought joy, comfort, and unwavering loyalty into my world. Together, we shared countless moments of love and devotion, and I believed we would grow old together.

Sage escaped our yard, a weakness in the fence we were working to fix. We had been in communication with the neighbor, and I offered to compensate for their chickens. We were trying to make things right, and yet, without empathy or mercy, the neighbor chose to shoot and kill my sweet Sage.

I never imagined that someone would take away the most precious being in my life. I feel deep regret—not for Sage’s actions, but because I didn’t protect her as fiercely as she protected me. The love she gave me every single day deserved to be returned in kind, and instead, she was taken from me in the most brutal way.

Our Call for Change
I’m heartbroken at the thought of this happening again. No other family should experience the pain of losing their pet in such a senseless, violent way. I am calling on lawmakers to:

  1. Prohibit Harm to Companion Animals for Unintentional Trespassing: We ask for laws that protect animals from harm or death if they wander onto someone’s property. No animal should ever be killed simply for following their curiosity or exploring their world. If there is no immediate threat to life, there should be no justification for violence.
  2. Impose Penalties for Unjustified Harm to Companion Animals: Harm or death of a pet should never be acceptable without clear justification. We urge lawmakers to enforce strict penalties against anyone who harms or kills a pet unnecessarily, while still respecting the property rights of others. Pets are not property—they are family, and they deserve to be treated with respect.
  3. Encourage Non-Lethal Conflict Resolution: There are always other options. We demand laws that encourage non-lethal solutions, such as calling animal control or law enforcement, before any drastic action is taken. Let’s put compassion first and work together to resolve conflicts peacefully, without taking a life.

Why This Matters
This is not just about the law. This is about the families who love their pets as members of their own homes. Sage was more than a dog; she was my heart, my guardian, and the one who kept me going when the world felt too dark. Her life was taken from me, and that pain still felt every day. No one should have to face that kind of heartbreak.

If we don’t act, more animals will suffer, more families will grieve, and more lives will be lost. This petition is not only a call to pass laws, but a plea for justice—for all the animals whose voices are silenced before their time. It’s a plea for compassion, for protection, and for the right to protect the ones we love.

Let’s ensure that no other pet suffers the same fate as Sage.
