Petition for Legal Protection from Abusive Parents in India

Petition for Legal Protection from Abusive Parents in India
The Issue
To: The Government of India, Ministry of Law & Justice, Supreme Court of India
Respect Should Not Mean Lifelong Suffering
India honors family values, and we are taught that parents deserve unconditional respect. But respect should be based on love and care, not fear and suffering. What happens when parents misuse their position—not to guide, but to dominate, manipulate, and destroy a child’s self-worth?
In every other relationship, the law protects individuals from abuse:
A spouse can leave an abusive marriage.
An employee can resign if their boss exploits them.
A citizen can take legal action against anyone violating their dignity.
But a child—EVEN AS AN ADULT—has no legal right to free themselves from a toxic, controlling parent.
If a boss says, "You must do what I say, or I will take away your job," you can quit.
If a husband says, "You have no right to make your own choices," the wife can divorce him.
But if a parent says, "I own you, and you will obey me, or else," what can a child do? Nothing.
Even Lord Ram had the freedom to leave Ayodhya with dignity—but in today’s India, a child trapped in a toxic household has no legal way out.
What This Petition Demands
We urge the Government of India to introduce a law that provides:
1. Legal Separation from Abusive Parents – A structured legal process allowing a child to prove severe parental abuse and gain independence.
2. Freedom from Forced Control – No parent should have the unchecked power to control their child’s career, marriage, or personal life through threats, emotional blackmail, or financial dependence.
3. A Dignified Exit in Extreme Cases – When a parent’s behavior causes severe psychological trauma or financial imprisonment, the child should have the same legal protection that an abused spouse or employee has.
This Is Not Against Parents—It Is Against Abuse
Not all parents are abusive. This law will not punish good parents—it will hold toxic ones accountable.
This law will not harm family values—it will protect them. Families should be built on love, not control.
A good parent has nothing to fear. Only those who violate their child’s dignity should worry.
Why This Law Is Needed
India already has laws protecting:
✅ Spouses from abusive marriages (Domestic Violence Act)
✅ Employees from workplace harassment (Labor Laws)
✅ Children from abuse—ONLY UNTIL THEY TURN 18 (Juvenile Justice Act)
But once a child turns 18, the law assumes they are "free." In reality, many are still:
Financially trapped by parents who control their education and career.
Emotionally blackmailed with threats of disownment, shame, or violence.
Mentally tortured into obeying choices they do not want.
This law will not break families—it will stop children from being broken inside their own homes.

If you believe that no child should be legally forced to endure lifelong abuse, sign this petition. Let’s ensure that every individual in India—not just spouses or employees, but children too—has the right to live with dignity.
