Last Friday, a profound message resonated with me during a church service: Do not settle. The pastor likened settling to the absence of snakes at the summit of mountains, introducing the concept of the 'snake line'—a boundary beyond which snakes cannot survive. This metaphor struck a chord with me, symbolizing the uncompromising standards we must uphold for our homes. This battle is not simple, but it is pivotal for transformative change. I urge every member of our community, especially those in Westfalia and prospective homeowners, to unite. It's time to leverage our collective financial power, which is highly sought after yet often met with subpar housing standards. Let's voice our concerns to the Department of Justice, Housing and Urban Development, loan servicers, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the Securities Exchange Commission, and all stakeholders with vested interests. The buck stops here!

My Story and the Genesis of This Petition

The quintessential American dream, especially the pursuit of homeownership, should be attainable for every citizen. After two decades of anticipation, I acquired my first home—a milestone I presumed to be routine. However, this milestone quickly devolved into a nightmare, highlighting the need for reform in housing legislation.

The home was sold to me without proper inspections, contravening the zoning and permitting laws of my county. In December 2023, I contacted DRB, the builder responsible for selling and constructing my dwelling, to address these discrepancies. Regrettably, they ignored the county's building codes, subjecting me to the relentless din of highway traffic.

Faced with indifference from both the county and the builder, I embarked on a personal quest to unearth the truth behind these oversights. My findings were alarming: a county-appointed inspector had issued a use and occupancy certificate for my home without the mandatory engineering studies and validations, as dictated by the county's own regulations.
