The Issue

We, the residents and community members, respectfully request the installation of a stop sign along South Monroe Street to improve safety for pedestrians, children, and drivers in our neighborhood.

South Monroe Street currently functions as a straight route out of town, which encourages drivers to travel at excessive speeds. This road is heavy traffic area and commonly used to access Route 9 to head out of town. Despite the posted speed limit of 30 mph, it is common for vehicles to exceed this limit by 10 mph or more. It is common for residential areas to have default speed limits of 25mph or even less, showing South Monroe Street is already at the high end for residential speed zones. This creates a dangerous environment, particularly in a neighborhood where many families live.

There are numerous children on and crossing this road daily, including those who walk to and from the primary/jr high school each day as well as children or families en route to Westwood Park. The current traffic conditions pose a serious risk to their safety.
The addition of a stop sign would help break up the long, uninterrupted stretch of road and require drivers to slow down and be more aware of their surroundings, significantly reducing the likelihood of future accidents and improving overall safety for everyone in the area.

We believe that proactive measures must be taken to prevent harm and ensure South Monroe Street, and Mackinaw as a whole, are safe for all residents, especially children.

We respectfully urge the appropriate authorities to take immediate action and install a stop sign or 4-way stop along Monroe Street.
