Petition for Increased Crime Prevention Measures and Basic Services in Beat 13Y
The Issue
To: Sheng Thao, Mayor of Oakland, District 4 Council Member Janani Ramachandran & Darren Alliso, Acting Chief of Police
From: Residents of Beat 13Y
Subject: Petition for Increased Crime Prevention Measures and Basic Services in Beat 13Y
We, the undersigned residents of Beat 13Y, are writing to express our deep concern about the high crime rate, lack of essential police services, and current challenges of not having a dedicated 24 x 7 police patrol or substation to cover the 3000+ parcels in our 13Y community. We are particularly concerned about the dramatic increase in burglaries, robberies, and assaults in 13Y over the last year.
We are a community of hard-working, tax-paying residents who deserve to feel safe in our homes and have access to basic services. We are paying 23% of Oakland taxes for the privilege of living in 13Y, and we expect our city to provide us with adequate crime prevention, investigation, cessation and essential police services. We cannot continue to engage private patrols to protect our neighborhoods while you do nothing to protect us. We are calling on you to immediately address the crime problem in Beat 13Y.
- We believe that the following measures are necessary:
Increase police presence in 13Y by dedicating 10 patrol officers per shift - An active police patrol car presence through the 13Y beat 24 hrs x 7 days a week
- Establish a police substation in Beat 13Y
- Fully staffed 911 call center to answer calls in seconds, and no calls put on hold
- 911 dispatches officers to respond to burglaries and car thefts within 2 hours
In summary, 13Y pays 23% of Oakland's taxes, yet we only have one police officer per 3,000 parcels. This gross disparity is unacceptable.
We request that you take immediate action to increase police presence in Beat 13Y and to provide us with the basic police services that we deserve.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Residents of City of Oakland, Beat 13Y
