The Issue

In September 2018, my best friend was severely beaten by her ex-partner.  In the report, she stated that he threatened to kill her and that he had previously strangled her to the point that she nearly lost consciousness. Despite these serious warning signs, he was only charged with Battery–Family Violence, immediately bonded out of jail, and his only punishment was probation. She also reported that he violated the no-contact order immediately after his arrest, and he was not charged further.

In July 2026, that same individual killed another woman before taking his own life and now a child is left without their parents.

This situation has left me asking what can be changed to prevent further tragedies from occurring. I cannot say with certainty that a different outcome in 2018 would have prevented what happened in 2026, but I do believe that cases that involve severe violence should receive the highest level of attention and intervention.

The purpose of this petition is not to blame any individual prosecutor, judge, or police officer. The purpose is to ask those responsible for the criminal justice system to review this case and determine whether there are opportunities for intervention in future cases that can help prevent similar tragedies.

I am asking the Lowndes County District Attorney, Solicitor-General for Lowndes County, Judge of Lowndes County State Court, and the Valdosta Police Department to formally review this case and decide what changes can be made to improve our legal justice system to protect victims of domestic violence.
